The park is also home to the Open Storybook Puppet Theater, the oldest continuously operating puppet theater in the United States. A nonprofit community organization, Fairyland offers children and families a safe, stimulating environment with fairy tales, fantasy sets, performing arts, animals, and unique children's programming. As part of its mission to encourage young children to discover the joys of reading, they welcome school children on field trips from all over the Bay Area and offer subsidized visits to neighbors in need.
His hope was to create much larger sets that children could climb in and interact with. After getting the backing of the Lake Merritt Breakfast Club , a civic organization devoted to improving the park, he took his ideas to William Penn Mott, Jr.
Rishell , Joseph R. Knowland and Thomas E. Caldecott to create the park. Navlet hired fantasy architect William Russell Everritt to design the original 17 sets.
It was exactly what Navlet was looking for. After spending some time in a remarkable palace, he returned home only to discover that centuries had passed. Furthermore, the dwarf he met placed a curse on the king and his men. They were doomed to roam the land for eternity and were unable to dismount from their horses. First and foremost, time flows very differently in Fairyland; what seems like an hour there could be months or even years back home.
There are multiple tales about people who spent what felt like a short time in the realm that returned and found that their entire homeland had changed.
One of the most famous tales of this nature of all time involves Oisin, the son of Fionn mac Cumhaill and a fairy woman. One day, the fairy princess, Niamh of the Golden Locks, invited Oisin to Tir Nan Og and after settling there for a few months, Oisin decided to return home to tell the Fianna Finn that he was doing well.
Niamh gave him a gift of a white horse and warned him not to touch the earth or else he would never return to Tir Nan Og. Oisin transformed into a weak and withered old man but lived long enough to tell others about his time in Fairyland.
Oisin was shocked and saddened to learn that everything had changed back home. The Great Fort of Tara was nothing but a hill, and the magnificent woodlands and forests were much smaller than before. It turned out that hundreds of years had passed. Oisin then encountered a group of men who struggled to move a stone.
Oisin tried to help but his saddle slipped, and he fell to the ground. The proud, young and strong Oisin transformed into a weak and withered old man but lived long enough to tell others about his remarkable time in Fairyland. While you may be enamoured by your welcome in Fairyland, it is best to decline their offer of food politely. It is said that if you try to eat the food of the fairies, you will be trapped in Fairyland forever. One night, soon after Halloween, the exhausted young man fell asleep in a haystack.
When he woke up, he saw fairies chopping up an old hag in the kitchen; then they boiled her and got the meat prepared for the guests! At the banquet table, the man politely refused to eat even though the table was laden with gorgeous food such as turkey, chicken, cakes, and butter.
The prince of the fairies finally persuaded the young man to drink some red wine and when he did, an enormous clap of thunder rocked the table, and the lights went off.
The young man woke up and found himself back in the haystack. Given the macabre nature of the experience, perhaps he was better off! Perhaps the biggest takeaway from life in Fairyland is that nothing is as it seems. In one tale, a man named Lutey is enchanted by a mermaid named Morwenna who tried to lure him into the water kingdom with promises of incredible treasures. She handed him a pearl comb and spoke of diamond covered roofs and gems so bright that they shone through the dark waters into ocean hillsides.
Fortunately, the barking of his dog broke the trance and Lutey realised the danger. As the mermaid tried to drag him down, he produced his knife, and the mermaid returned to the sea. The fairies typically live in red and white toadstool houses unless mentioned otherwise.
Outside of the residential area is a heather-covered moorland with fields filled with wild flowers. The Magic Forest is a dark area with tall trees with thick leaves. The Seeing Pool is a special pool used by Queen Titania, where she can see many things at places where she wasn't present. The kingdom has its own sports stadium, Sweet Factory and a concert hall.
The Fairyland Nursery is where the young fairies are to be looked after by Jennifer the Babysitter Fairy. The Fairyland School is a prestigious school where many fairies attend. The Royal School of Music is a tall white building where many of the magic instruments are and the fairies come to learn music.
There are many events going on in Fairyland, including music festivals and the Toy Town Festival. The Fairyland Palace is the representation of Fairyland on the maps. It is a huge pink-blue palace with 7 tall towers. It has a big garden and a stage where events like shows and performances are usually held. Inside there is the Palace Library, the Throne Room, and a large ballroom where parties and balls are held.
Workplaces for each fairy group are inside the palace, such as the Wedding Workshop for Mia the Bridesmaid Fairy.
