MailOnline decided to find out whether the fairer sex really do prefer their men looking like a Greek god, or whether pale and interesting is actually a more enticing proposition in reality.
We asked ten ladies to don a pair of state-of-the art eye-tracking glasses - and then meet a trio of men with very different physical appeals; while one, was muscly, another was boyish and the third was more slender, sporting a hipster look. Brief encounter: The models used in our experiment: from left brawny Laszlo, 25, clean-cut Danny, 22, and tattooed Daniel, Looking good!
But where did our volunteers look? Many of the ladies taking part admitted they found it 'very difficult' to maintain eye contact with the scantily-clad volunteers. And we didn't tell them the guys would be stripped down to their underwear, meaning they would see everything, well, almost, that the men had to offer.
After a brief chat with all three of the men; muscular Laszlo Doszpod, 25, boyish Danny Golds, 22, and hipster Daniel Hayes, 27, MailOnline consulted both the technology and the ladies taking part for their verdict. The physique that attracted the most attention from the women was Danny and his clean-cut looks; with 40 per cent saying they were most drawn by his physique. Next up was Daniel, our more slender framed - and heavily tattooed - chap; 31 per cent of the women said they'd be most likely to want to see him again of the three.
The results! Danny's wholesome face and toned frame was a hit with MailOnline's females. The year-old, pictured centre, was deemed the most attractive, while hipster Daniel, 27, managed 31 per cent. Beefy Laszlo got the least number of admiring glances 29 per cent. Who stared at who: The eye-tracking software measured just who was gazing at which guy, with Daniel the hipster getting the lowest glance time 7 seconds and Danny the highest 15 seconds.
Not blushing, honest: Connie Sideras, one of the female volunteers, wears the eye-tracking glasses as she meets, from left, Laszlo, Danny and Daniel. Finally, the man with the most gym-honed brawn, Laszlo, garnered 29 per cent of the vote. And when it came to glances, one woman spent just 7 seconds eyeing up Daniel, preferring to linger longer on handsome Danny, who procured 15 seconds of her time. A previous MailOnline eye-tracking, which reversed the sexes in the experiment saw men adhering to the stereotype that curvy women will always catch the eye of straight men although it was a much closer contest.
The curvaceous model attracted 36 per cent of the glances, while an athletic model got 35 per cent and the most slender accounted for 29 per cent of looks during a second period.
Approximately zero Exactly zero women found the weaker-looking men more attractive via The Washington Post. All the women picked the fittest specimens as the most desirable. It turns out that how strong the men appeared aligned nicely with their actual strength.
Part of the study was using weightlifting machines, grip strength tests, and other means to determine their physical strength. The women judges were able to weed out the stronger men from the weaker ones just by closely examining the photos.
While the study may seem to be pointless at first glance, the researchers say it supports something else that humankind has known for a while, going back to our ancestry. But where does this leave those who do not have the time to engage in strenuous gym sessions and diet fads?
Does this leave you consigned to the dustbin of female rejection for evermore? Results taken from a nationwide survey should reassure gentlemen who are too busy for the gym, as they show that women may still fancy you anyway. Unsurprisingly, most women do prefer a taller man.
Women tend to like men with broad shoulders, as this emphasises masculinity and strength, making them feel feminine by contrast. Again this is probably a hangover from our Stone-Age mating rituals, and its pulling power today is as strong as ever.
