The Honda VFR is also ripe for modification, with plenty of tuners around to get the best from your bike. Read what they have to say and what they like and dislike about the bike below. Fantastic build quality, proven over decades of useage. Was beautiful in , still beautiful today Afordable class and style.
Still WOW! Buying experience: Lucky to get a low milage less than k miles it was winning the lottery! Best: nothing keeps going wrong with mine at 49k miles, sublime unique engine sound, zero leaks, excellent comfort, no vibration at all RPMs, all the acceleration I need in 3. Only complaints: could loose 50 lbs, and the NACA duct inapproprially adds pressure at the rear of the engine compartment which is where you want low pressure to exhaust the hot air.
Stainless braided brake line upgrade made my brakes the ideal combination of stength and sensitivity. The RC36 engine is the most dependable high-revving engine ever made in the history of humanity. Many documented examples with over k miles without overhauls. At 49k miles, mine has only needed front break service. Looked bad, but ran perfectly still does. The best all around street motorbike I have ever owned.
I rode mine for hours at a time. It was easily adjustable to fit my preferred riding position. No complaints with the brakes and drivetrain. Very smooth running motor that always performed well. No problems ever, made sure it had all its scheduled services by a Honda certified shop. Superb reliability and quality of finish. All-round rideability with simplicity compared to contemporary bikes. Great power delivery, pulling throughout the rev range.
Not overly powerful by today's standards but very usable no matter cruising, touring or commuting. LIghting upgrade to LED, maybe abs and brake upgrade. Fairing might needs maintenance after ,k on mine.
Rear suspension replaced this year which improved things, well it had to be replaced really after ,k. Not many long trips these days but easily ride all day aside from fuel stops. Have bar risers and a high screen would help.
Just runs and runs, just change the oil. Cam driven gears and buttery carbs are so good. I sometimes try other bikes out but nothing comes close to this engine. Better, smoother, than a V twin low end but remembers its a Jap four top end.
Delivers rpm upwards with good usable delivery - rpm which is really useful most of the time, and the usual power stuff after up to 12, In sumary a very ridable bike in all road conditions. Had my 94 for about half its life and it's just clocked over ,km this year Reliability has been outstanding. Valves also last checked at 17,km, front-wheel bearings two years ago along with rear and front disc rotors. The rectifier was replaced soon around with a larger QEM version and has given no trouble since although the connecter wires were hard-wired and the connecter was corroding.
Rear suspension replaced this year. It broke down once when a rear spark plug blew out two years ago and, er, I think that's about it. See above for stuff outside this. It only sees a garage occasionally. Standard is pretty good. Fitted bar risers recently. Upgraded to Angel 2 tyres which are great in all conditions.
LED front lights as I do mainly short commute trips and they help with charging. Buying experience: Bought from a dealer second hand with 64,km on the clock. Was the cleanest of two VFR's offered. No issues. Loved by owners but never graced a bedroom wall. Heritage of iconic Honda V4 RC30 but a sports tourer so not flickable nor heart pumping like a Fireblade. Mine is painted Castrol Honda colours , and I like the grunty performance and sound.
Ideal for a road trip. Slightly top heavy when tank is full and weight means a a lot of momentum to shift. But that means great stability too. Heavier than a sports bike but very stable. Go and stops great given its age. My bike is very old but despite living outside under cover is in superb condition. You become aware of the incredible engineering when you do some maintenance yourself. These bikes are super cheap These are the best bargain bikes available I'd say.
For its time had everything Buying experience: I bought mine surfing the internet one sleepless night It is incredible and accelerated like butter, so smooth.
Also Delkevic exhausts are what I have on both my bikes and I highly recommend, for the money. I replace the regulator before it went out with a Shindengen. Buying experience: Privately. Stock suspension and brakes are To get the best out of the engine and the frame, upgrade both suspension and brakes. If you want to keep the bike, fit a pukka aftermarket rear shock and a front-end transplant CBRF4i is a straight bolt-in upgrade - you won't ever look back.
If there's a bike engine that's this good at any revs, that sounds this good and outlasts many a car engine, I don't know of it. Mine's got north of ,km on it and all its valve clearances are still within factory spec. Keep the engine oil clean and the carbs balanced and it will do , miles.
Nothing mechanical - not a thing - has ever set a foot wrong. The only problems I've ever had in 17 years and ,km of ownership have been electrical now permanently fixed and some minor cracks in the rear panels.
As the saying goes, whatever you paid for a VFR, it's worth at least twice that. Updates to both front and rear suspension and brakes have cost me a lot of dosh but doing so was my choice. Buying experience: Bought from a dealer well over a decade ago. Best bike I've ever owned! It's lighter, more flickable, slimmer, better looking, easier to work on, and even though probably not as quick in a straight line, fast enough! Ride quality is very plush - comfy seat etc. Must be one of the most beautiful sounds humankind has ever created.
We should be very proud of ourselves. Mine has a 4 into 1 stainless steel, which in summer goes into a high-level Black Widow, which pops, farts and belches constantly. Highly addicitve. In that time, apart from consumables, the only things replaced have been the original duff alternator, and the fuel pump points. Pretty good for a bike that has seen 22 Scottish winters!
About normal? Definitely a collector's item! Like some Honda bikes, these V4 examples seem like something timelessly and alienly built, and when you find one in mint conditions Something drawn and built like a Star Wars or Star Trek episodes and ships. Built for the road Do you need a bigger stable? I don't. Roads do not forgive, tracks most of the times, do. This V4 is a peach and someting that earned a place in my garage for eternity. I got a example in mint condition, it looks amazing and I'm very happy I've bought it, from a guy that did that, just to buy a new V4 RSV Aprilia.
Easy maintance, 60 per cent made to be owner's DIY, fuids and filters are a delight to change on this bike, as well as the rest. Buying experience: Private seller, that works on a "Motospazzio". Best motorbike I have ever owned. The V45 motor was very smooth with a healthy power band.
With new Two Brothers exhaust that was positioned above the rear trye, it breathed a bit better and sounded fantastic. No problems ever and was regularly maintained at suggested intervals. Subsequent models VFR were even more bolt upright and so for that reason and the introduction of a linked braking system I never considered upgrading.
Until now. Mostly I would echo Stuart Mudd's comprehensive review except I rate the engine a solid 5. Having just returned to Sydney from the Phillip Island MotoGP including several hundred kms of fast twisties with 10 other bikes, all cc or above, I had plenty to test it against. The key is dropping down a gear. VFR has low down torque enabling a higher gear to be used but comes alive if you slip back a notch.
It is a brilliant bike. I usually keep a bike for 18 months max because it just doesn't check all the boxes for me. I've so far gone with carbs, but you might want the newer technology, have to decide that yourself. The fuel injected makes a little more power, but not that much that I really noticed it in day-to-day riding. The gear drive on the 5th gen is on the right side of the engine, while the gear drive on the 4th gen is in the centre of the engine.
As a result, the 5th gen makes a lot more gear noise. I preferred the slightly quieter valve train of the 4th gen. Brakes on the 5th gen are superior, but as they only slow you down I never cared too much about it. Fascinating discussion. I'd go with the 5th gen That's becoming a rarified animal. I too, thought the 5th gen was wierd when I first saw it, but it grows on you. I really think it has fantastic lines. I am sure all years have their good parts and I hope to own all of them at some point, but I just truely love my bike.
As an owner who has owned 3 4th Gens and 1 5th Gen, I vote 4th. It IS the iconic model and a far more attractive bike than the somewhat "dumpy" I didn't like the linked brakes though some peoples swear by them. Fuelling on the is so smooth compared to the FI of the early 's as well. Buy with your heart, because, in the end, you'll love it whichever iteration of the model you choose. The 4th gen is very aesthetically pleasing.
The LBS of the 6th gen was somewhat abhorrent to me also until I began to work with it. Now, I actually use the rear pedal lightly and like the feel, whereas before LBS, I never touched it.
Leave it to the government to screw up your driveability, in the name of Global Warming? The 4th generation US models ''96 were red. You are probably thinking about the '93 3rd generation model.
